In our modern culture, we don’t have to look far to see that the dignity of the human person and the family are under attack. So too is the dignity of the home. As an interior designer, I began to notice that many modern homes more closely resemble amusement parks or movie theaters rather than places of retreat and prayer. This trend unsettled me. Ecclesia Domestica - Latin for "domestic church" - is a Portam Interiors collection that seeks to help restore what the world has distorted in the home by inviting families and individuals to tithe a portion of their home to God through a home altar or chapel space, and from there - to properly order all of the other spaces of the home around this very spiritual heart. Founded on the instruction of Luke 12:33 and the study of spaces within a monastery, this biblically based and monastic-inspired approach to design encourages detachment, cultivates order and fosters spiritual routine within the home.
